Pop Goes the Musical

Is it time to defend the juke box musical – or at least stop mocking it?

Mamma Mia. Jersey Boys. All Shook Up. Rock of Ages. Movin’ Out:  for the last two decades, Broadway has played host to a long line of “jukebox musicals” – theatre productions that have taken pop and rock music from the radio to the stage as the framework for musical theatre.

On Monday, August 6, Gamut Theatre Group will unveil its recently renovated, 10,000 square-foot Gamut Theatre Education Center at its location at 15 North 4th Street. 

The new stage will be the permanent home for the Popcorn Hat Players Children's Theatre, as well as the Stage Door Series Ensemble and Gamut Theatre Academy.

This weekend, Theatre Harrisburg will debut the first-ever full production of Grave Doubts, a new play by David Steven Simon.

This is a significant shifting of gears for Simon, who has been a successful writer for hit television shows like Sister, Sister, Full House, The Wayans Brothers, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Mad About You, and many others.  In his words “the only similarity between writing for the stage and writing for television is the keyboard.”
