Sankofa African American Theatre Company is committed to engaging and enriching the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania region through authentic African American perspectives on relevant social and cultural issues by staging thought-provoking theatrical productions. Founded in 2016, Sankofa derives its name from the Akan word meaning “to go back and reclaim our past so we can move forward,” reflecting the company’s dedication to illuminating history, fostering cross-cultural dialogue, and advancing equitable representation in the arts.
Sankofa has contributed significantly to the region’s cultural and educational landscape, increasing opportunities for African American theatre artists and attracting a diverse audience of over 15,000 people to its live performances. Through a vibrant roster of new and published works—including both classics and original stories—Sankofa is a catalyst for cross-cultural learning, community engagement, and artistic innovation.
