During World War II, Joe Keller and Steve Deever ran a machine shop which made airplane parts. As a result of a scandal involving defective parts that resulted in the deaths of a number of soldiers, Deever was sent to prison. His partner Keller went free and went on to make a lot of money. This catastrophe is compounded by the fact that the Keller’s young son was reported missing in action.
The love affair of Keller’s other son and Ann Deever, and the bitterness of George Deever, who returns from the war to find his father in prison and his father’s business partner free, all set the stage for a story of accountability, consequences, and unbearable guilt.

This original work pays homage to the resilient spirit of the nineteenth and twentieth-century African American liberators, educators, orators, and writers who fought to build a community of freedom and belonging.
